GoTEN - Help a Refugee
GoTEN is helping legally resettled refugees learn English, get jobs and experience Christian community in Arizona. GoTen opens Life Skills Centers in neighborhoods and apartment complexes that are home to legally resettled refugees.
Volunteers partner with an adult student during an English lesson taught by the computer, navigate our systems and adapt to American culture. Shoulder to shoulder you work through the lesson celebrating progress and assisting in moving the computer program forward. Although we call you an Encourager, you will be the one encouraged as you experience the tenacity of our students as they learn. They are not learning English as a hobby, but because their lives and the family’s lives depend on it. It truly is inspiring. After 30 minutes of computer lessons, we will take a short break and do a group learning activity. The group time is led by one of our staff and there is no preparation needed from your side. The lessons taught during this group time usually include a citizenship question and answer and sometimes a game. After 15 minutes or so, you will return to the computer to finish the planned lesson for another 30 minutes.
